The next series of Doctor Who will air in two parts, it has been announced.
Speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival this morning, showrunner Steven Moffat confirmed that the sixth run will start in Spring 2011 and return in the Autumn.
A statement from the BBC explained: "The split transmission is the result of a request from Steven Moffat to write a new Doctor Who story arc which involves a big plot twist in the middle of the series. By splitting the series Moffat plans to give viewers one of the most exciting Doctor Who cliffhangers and plot twists ever, leaving them waiting, on the edge of their seats, until the autumn to find out what happens."

It was chaos all round for Doctor Who aficionados yesterday as 150 fans were turned away from a personal appearance in Glasgow by Karen Gillan, who plays the Doctor’s feisty and flirtatious assistant.
The actress also admitted she didn’t even know if she’d be appearing in the third series of the show with Matt Smith – the current time-travelling hero.
Gillan cast doubt on her future during a signing event at Hamleys toy store in Glasgow’s St Enoch centre. When the 22-year-old actress from Inverness was asked if a third series was ahead of her, she said : “Who knows? I’m just taking it series by series and I’m just having fun. So, I don’t know. I have no idea.”
The star remained tight-lipped about the Christmas special and second series, which she is about to start filming.
“We are about to start in a week-and-a-bit on the series, which is exciting,” she said. “We’ve finished the Christmas special so that’s all in the can and it’s a good one.
“It’s really funny but it’s also heartbreaking ... There’s a really, really scary monster in the Christmas special.”
